IGP Hérault

The Hérault department is the heartland of the vast Languedoc-Roussillon region and lies on the Mediterranean coast around the city of Montpellier.  The dynamic AOCs of Corbières, Minervois, St Chinian, Faugères and Pic St Loup all lie within this area and a full range of wine styles is on offer.  Grapes are a blend of those firmly associated with the Mediterranean – Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Carignan for the reds, macabeu, Grenach Blanc, Viognier and Terret for the whites – accompanied by the ever-present noble varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.  Bright fruit flavours abound, these are wines for easy drinking and should be offered at excellent value prices.

(The IGP denomination refers to the level of wine formerly known as Vin de Pays, above Vin de Table and below Appellation Contrôlée.  It is also commonly used by producers of AOC wine for that part of their production that lies outside the AOC limits, where yields are too high for AOC, or where they are using grape varieties not allowed by the AOC.)
