This huge appellation in the south-eastern Rhône covers approximately 7,500 ha and takes its name from the iconic mountain which lies at its centre, Le Mont Ventoux, a Mecca-like destination for lovers of cycling as it features each year in the Tour de France race as the most gruelling ascent stage.
Red and rosé wines are mainly produced here, from Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan grapes. Much of the production passes through a number of large cooperatives that dominate the market. Although definitely moving up in the world – Ventoux was known only for bulk table wine until relatively recently – few wines of outstanding quality are produced, of which our offerings from Chêne Bleu are very much at the vanguard.
