Our French Wine Selection
All Bordeaux négociants began life as dealers exclusively in Bordeaux wines, and many remain just that, but there is a strong move nowadays towards diversification and offering wines from different regions. The Bordeaux place system is now a key motor in the global distribution of some of the world’s finest non-Bordeaux wines such as Super Tuscans Solaia and Masseto, or New World stars Opus One or Almaviva.
In our small way we also want to bring our customers great wines from outside Bordeaux, and being based in the southwest of France allows us to cover half of the country, from the Loire to Provence, increasingly effectively.
The advantages of widening our range are that our customers can spend less time sourcing and more time selling, because that is where the money is generated. Even if you pride yourself on being a dynamic, active wine buyer, having a supply partner based full time amongst the vines can help you reach those producers you simply wouldn’t have time to discover. And because we are moving volumes of wines for these producers we are able to negotiate better commercial relations, so in most cases you will find our prices are the same as theirs.
France is home to our unique and innovative partner, Club Vertuvin. This exciting group of producers are at the vanguard of a new movement of social enterprise, promoting human well-being and respect for the environment by producing great-value wines with the help of – and to the benefit of – hundreds of people with learning difficulties. The Club, the brainchild of Pierre Hoerter in Alsace, is set to grow into an internationally-recognised concept which allows consumers to make important decisions to contribute to society through the wines they choose. Think of Fair Trade, but specifically geared to help those who are mentally less fortunate rather than just financially.
