Our Spanish Selection

It is hard to imagine a more dynamic and exciting wine producing country than Spain today, which has emerged in just a few decades from a history of cheap bulk wine to become an entire universe of winemaking diversity.  From the damp pagodas of Galicia to the arid meseta of La Mancha, every style of wine imaginable emanates from Spain today.

Since the demise of Franco and joining the European common market in the 1980’s, Spain has established a cohesive four-tier quality system similar in many ways to the French INAO, and has experienced remarkable economic growth that has encouraged huge investment in the wine industry.  Although the last decade has been very tough economically for Spaniards, they are once again energising the international wine market with everything from attractive mass-market offerings to some of the most exciting Fine Wines you can buy.

As far as quality is concerned, so much potential still remains to be realised: there is a good supply of old-vine vineyards, many planted at altitude, and the climate allows for more consistent fruit ripening than in northern Europe.
